The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hosted a webinar on March 13th for users regarding upcoming enhancements to the Medicare Secondary Payment Recovery Portal (MSPRP). As you are likely aware, the MSPRP focuses on personal injury recoveries only: workers’ compensation, no-fault and liability insurance. The enhancements relate to electronic payment functionality available on April 1st 2019 and are as follows:
Once a payment is submitted successfully, a confirmation number will display on the “Payment Status” page on the MSPRP. Users will also be able to review previous electronic payments. The electronic payment history tab will show the history of electronic payments, including the payment date, payment method, account holder name, payment amount, payment status and updated demand status with corresponding date. Payment processing time will be one to three business days. Payments made by check will not appear on the MSPRP.
What this means for the workers’ compensation, no-fault and liability insurance entities is that they have the ability to pay Medicare electronically via the portal up to $24,999.99, provided that they have an account from which they can make direct payment. Where possible, this may be a useful tool for adjusters to quickly make payments on Demands and avoid interest from accruing.
ExamWorks Compliance Solutions will continue to monitor the newswire for additional comments from CMS about electronic portal payments. The MSPRP User Manual can be found at https://www.cob.cms.hhs.gov/MSPRP.
